Cyclists roll through stops signs quite often. Thats just a fact. There are many reasons for this, and the following video presents many of them, and a solution that has been in place since 1982 in Idaho. Issueing tickets to every cyclist who rolls through a stop sign when no traffic is present is clearly not reducing the number of incidents.
Video was first shown on Austin On Two Wheels . Good article about the Idaho Stop Law.
Chris Riley, running for Place 1, will be hosting a cycling scavenger hunt. Check the jump for the flyer. I will be there. Come see what he has to say, and why he is the most bicycle friendly council candidate we have had in a long time. Sign up here.
It is sad how ridiculous we look as a state when crap like this happens. And it isn't just Dripping Springs, either. Cars hit bikes every day in Austin because they are driving recklessly, and APD rarely charges the motorist. I have several friends this has happened to. No wonder cyclists don't trust the police.
OK, this might be my best chance to win something since the 2008 City Council elections. Misprint Beard & Moustache Competition, 2009. Follow the jump for the official event poster. And please come and cheer me on!
Finally, something positive when it comes to catching bike thieves. APD recently arrested James Clayton, a local cyclist and former competitive mountain biker, for rampant bike theft. I wonder if my Felt Z85 is in the pile of stuff police recovered. I really hope this guy gets the maximum sentence, cause anyone who claims to be a friend of cyclists, while stealing their bikes, is clearly so deluded I'm sure he will do it again. To everyone who supported me in my campaign to become the next City Councilman, I would like to say thank you. You made this a wonderful experience. While I didn't win, I do feel like I was able to accomplish a lot. You can view the results here.
